Ham & Bean Soup

Its Fall, its chilly, and its the start of soup weather...

One of my favorite pieces in the kitchen is my Crockpot. In the morning, place a few choice ingredients in it, and by evening, you have a complete meal.

Lets talk about Ham Hocks and Crockpots.

My late Father-in-law was the first person to show me all about Ham Hocks. He was a butcher and he explained that if you want good broth or soup, you have to slowly cook a quality Ham Hock. He was absolutely right.

Below is a recipe we love and is super easy.


Ham & Bean Soup

  • 2 to 3 Ham Hocks
  • 1- 16 oz. bag of dried Pinto or Navy beans (or you can use 3 - 8oz. cans of cooked beans)
  • 3 C. Cubed Potato's
  • 1/2 C. Diced Onion
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • Parsley, to garnish before serving (optional) 

The night before- Cover beans with water and soak overnight. This helps the bean to cook more evenly.

  1. Set crockpot temperature to high.
  2. Put Ham Hocks in and cover with water, approx. 2 quarts.
  3. Add Beans, Onion, and seasoning. 
  4. Slowly cook for 6 hrs. or until Ham is loose and falls off the bone.
  5. Add potatoes and simmer until they are soft. 

Serve with your choice of crusty bread, salad and sliced cheese.
